What is an RL environment for a business workflow?
Last updated /Reinforcement learning environments
An RL environment for a business workflow is a task carved out of that workflow so a system can attempt it and be checked. You name the situation at the start. You name the moves that are allowed. You name a check a second person could apply to the ending. Until those three names exist, you have a history of work, which may be valuable, and you do not yet have an environment. The history is not promoted by vocabulary. Calling a shared drive an environment does not make the drive one.
The general requirements, written for someone who already thinks in tasks, live on the pillar what reinforcement learning environments need from real work. This page is the translation, one process at a time. It uses a jobsite question as the example so the translation is concrete. A superintendent's daily note says the drawing and the field disagree. An RFI goes out. The work pauses, proceeds, or is rebuilt. That loop is described as a trade on what a construction company already generates that can train AI. Here the same loop is only a specimen for how you would name a task, not a claim about construction files.
A plant's deviation and hold is a different specimen, on what a manufacturer already generates that can train AI. The ordered evidence you would read before you name anything is what an agent trajectory records from real work. Whether the records can be licensed is how workflow and process records can be licensed. A commercial permission, separate from the task design, is what AI data licensing means for a company.
Why a named task is stricter than a realistic story
A realistic story can still be unfair as a task. If the check uses a fact the actor could not have seen, the system is graded on mind reading. If every action is allowed, including actions no employee could take, the task is a sandbox with no resemblance to the job. Builders who say they want a business environment usually want the stricter object: the same constraints a person had, and a check that does not cheat. Naming those constraints is the work. The story is only the source.
This is also why a finished environment is not the first thing a company should hand over. Designing the task can reveal that the records do not support a fair check. That revelation is a successful use of the records. It is not a failure to monetize them.
How you would name the task, and then stop
Take the jobsite question as a sketch, not as a template you must copy. The point is the three names.
- Start. What is true when the task begins, and what is the actor allowed to know? In the specimen, the start might be a field note that the installed work and the sheet disagree, without the later answer already written in.
- Moves. Which actions are in bounds? Ask a question, pause the work, proceed on an assumption, or call a defined role. Actions that require a password, a person's private file, or a document the company does not control are not moves you should include by habit.
- Check. What ending counts, in a way a second person could audit? The work was clarified and built to the answer, or it was left unchanged for a stated reason. A vibe that the owner seemed satisfied is not a check.
If you cannot fill those three from records the company actually kept, you do not have an environment yet. You may still have a trajectory, a daily report, or nothing separable from someone else's drawing. Stop at that finding. Do not invent the missing check so the task looks gradable.
What this translation refuses to do
- It does not turn the owner's drawings into the task. Receiving sheets in order to build is not a right to offer the sheets as the world the agent sees.
- It does not promise a reset button. Historical jobs happened once. An environment that can be attempted again is a later design, not a property of the archive.
- It does not decide the license. A fair task can still be a use the contracts forbid. Fair and forbidden is still forbidden. This page is not legal advice.
What makes the translation fail
- The ending was never written down. You cannot check a task whose result lives only in someone's memory.
- The start already contains the answer. A record that was edited after the fact to include the resolution is a spoiled exam.
- The only actions in the file are status slogans. Moved and closed, with no content, do not define moves.
- The check depends on a person's identity or on a secret the actor used. Those tasks often cannot be offered even if they are intellectually neat.
- Someone treats the pillar page and this page as the same document. The pillar says what any environment needs. This page says how you would try to name one workflow. Neither page builds the environment.
What we will not pretend to deliver
The company behind Big Data/Little Guy is Unlockt, LLC. We will not show up with a finished environment because a workflow sounds repeated. The free check asks whether tasks with outcomes exist. It is a check you can take without uploading the job file.
If a profile is written, it can say that a class of work has starts, actions, and endings in the records, and it can say what is already known to be off limits. Task design, if the owner and a buyer both want it, comes after a scope. You can refuse the design. Definitions of the words around this page are in plain definitions for AI data licensing terms. Most companies should expect the conversation to end at the profile or at a no.
Questions people ask
Is this the same page as the reinforcement learning environments guide?
No. That pillar says what an environment needs in general. This page walks one business process toward a named start, moves, and check, and it tells you when to stop.
Does naming the three parts create an environment?
It creates a specification. Building something an agent can attempt is later work, and only if you approve a slice and the rights allow it.
Can every repeated workflow be named this way?
No. Some lack an ending, some spoil the start with the answer, and some cannot be separated from another party's documents.
Is the jobsite example a real customer?
No. It is a specimen of the translation. It is not a case study and not permission for construction files.
Do we have to license the drawings to define the task?
No. If the task only works by offering someone else's design, that is a reason to abandon the task, not a reason to include the design.
How do we start?
Use the free check and describe one repeated job in words: how it starts, what people are allowed to do, and how you know it ended. Leave the files in the system your team uses.
