What data does a construction company already generate for AI training?
Last updated /Seller intent
A contractor already generates a daily argument with the job. The superintendent writes what crew was on site, what was installed, what weather or a missing delivery stopped, and what will be tried tomorrow. Someone sends a request for information because the drawing and the field disagree. A change is priced, rejected, or folded into the work. Project management data, in this trade, is that loop: field report, question, and change. It is not the owner's full drawing set, and it is not a photo album of people's faces. Companies produce the loop in order to get paid and to avoid building the wrong thing. Training value, if it exists, is the loop. The right to offer it is not established by the fact that the files sit in the builder's project tool.
An agent that helped a project engineer would need to see how a conflict was noticed, who was asked, and whether the work proceeded, paused, or was rebuilt. A schedule update with no narrative is a bar chart. A daily report that says worked with no obstacle and no result is a timesheet slogan. The useful examples include the obstacle. They also collide quickly with other people's paper: the architect's sheet, the subcontractor's number, the owner's confidential program. This page separates those collisions from the contractor's own narrative. It does not rule that any job file may be licensed. It is not legal advice.
Workflow shape in general is how workflow and process records can be licensed. Written means and methods the contractor authored are how internal documents and playbooks can be licensed. A defined permission, not a sale of the company, is what AI data licensing means for a company. Plants and freight desks are different physical trades: what a manufacturer already generates that can train AI and what a logistics company already generates that can train AI.
Why the field note beats the bid narrative
A proposal describes the job the company hoped to win. The daily report describes the job that showed up: a slab that was not ready, a delivery that arrived damaged, a crew sent home, a workaround the superintendent will defend later. That gap is the craft. Public case studies sand it down. The project tool, when people actually typed into it, keeps the sand.
RFIs are a particularly sharp trace because they force a question and, sometimes, an answer that changes the work. An unanswered RFI is a weaker example. A change log with no link to the question that caused it is also weaker. The contractor who can point from question to answer to field result has a workflow. The contractor who has only a shared drive of PDFs has a filing cabinet.
Which project records are candidates to describe
- Daily reports that name the obstacle and the next action, not only the headcount slogan.
- RFI trails with a question, a response, and a visible effect on the work or a statement that the work did not change.
- Change workflows the contractor runs: noticed, priced or not, accepted or refused, built or not. The dollars can be beside the point. The path is the point. Another party's confidential price may still have to stay out.
- Means and methods the contractor wrote for its own supers, still recognizable as how the company builds.
Jobsite limits that are easy to trip over
- The owner's drawings, specifications, and program. Receiving them to build the job is not a grant to offer them onward.
- Subcontractor quotes, labor rates, and claim files. Those can be someone else's commercial secrets or a dispute record, not a training example.
- Photos and videos of workers, occupants, or license plates. A progress photo that cannot be described without the people in it is a heavier record than the daily log.
- Safety incidents that identify a person. A later change in how the crew stages material can be a workflow. The incident report is not an attachment to toss in.
What makes a project archive bulky and still empty
- A drive of drawings the company did not author and cannot explain a right to share.
- Daily reports copied forward with the date changed and no new fact. Repetition without an event is not history.
- Schedules with no tie to what the field actually did. The bar chart and the report disagree, and nobody recorded which one was true.
- Photo dumps from a jobsite camera or a group chat, exported because the folder was large.
- Assuming every project in a program is the company's story. Joint ventures and construction-manager arrangements split control of the file. Describe the part you created.
How a contractor would start without uploading the job
This marketplace is Big Data/Little Guy, operated by Unlockt, LLC. The free check does not want the drawing set. It can establish whether daily reports, questions, and changes are kept in a way a person can still explain.
A profile would say which of those three exist and which limits are already obvious, including owner paper and photos of people. Buyers would see the profile, not the job file. Why legality is not a yes for every company is why a rich project history can remain unavailable. If the narrative only lives inside the owner's document control system, say that. It may mean the separable record is thin. Thin is an acceptable answer.
Questions people ask
Are the drawings the valuable file?
Usually they are someone else's design. The contractor's field loop, if the contractor wrote it, is the operating record. The drawing set is a rights problem first.
Do daily reports count if they are short?
A short report with a real obstacle can count more than a long report that repeats yesterday. No obstacle and no result is a weak example.
Can we include subcontractor pricing from a change?
Not by default. Another company's price may be confidential. The fact that a change was requested and either built or refused can be described without the number.
What about progress photos?
Treat them as higher risk. People and identifying details are reasons to leave the image out. The written report is the cleaner artifact.
Does a joint venture change this?
It can. Control of the file may be shared. Do not offer a partner's or an owner's system as if it were solely yours.
How do we begin?
Describe the loop in words: daily report, question, change. Leave the project tool where the team uses it.
